It’s fun to plan a family trip or even a family reunion around Thanksgiving time – after all, getting together with family is what Thanksgiving is all about. And if you combine the time with a bit of a vacation and take advantage of Thanksgiving meal offers, no one has to do all the cooking and cleaning up.
What’s a bit more challenging is to find a sunny place where it’s warm and relaxing. There are some good reunion spots, though, that fit the bill. Here are some ideas.
1. Mexico
There are child-friendly beach resorts in Mexico, and there is a variety of resorts that are all-inclusive. Cancun is a popular winter vacation spot, as are Los Cabos and the Riviera Maya. Cancun is a good choice for those who enjoy city life and what it has to offer. Cancun has hotels with family packages and even “baby clubs.” The Riviera Maya is more historic, with Mayan ruins to visit and the world’s second-largest barrier reef.
2. Disney World (Florida) and Disneyland (California)
It used to be that the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas was something of an “off season” for a Disney visit. Now, however, it’s gaining popularity as a good place for a Thanksgiving family reunion, especially if children are involved. So make reservations early if you want to have your Thanksgiving celebrations there. Both destinations are great for families, generally warm and sunny, and the parks often stay open late during the season. (Note: Disney World sustained minimal damage from Hurricane Irma and will reopen on 9/12/17)
3. Caribbean Cruise
A Caribbean cruise is a possibility, and special deals abound during this time of year. Like so many sunny vacation spots, however, it is gaining popularity as a great place to have a Thanksgiving celebration, so make reservations early.
4. Hawaii
A reunion in Hawaii can be great fun. The weather is warm and the beaches are beautiful. A tiki-themed celebration or luau would be especially fun for a large group. But all-inclusive beach resorts are not plentiful in Hawaii – activities for kids will probably include an extra charge. Waikiki Beach and the Ka’anapali Beach Hotel feature children’s programs and classically “Hawaiian” activities.
5. Caribbean Islands
Jamaica and the Dominican Republic are popular destinations for family groups. Some beach resorts in the area are geared toward kids, and the prices are much lower in November.
6. Florida
In addition to being the home of Disney World, Florida also has Amelia Island, with resorts that make a big deal out of celebrating Thanksgiving. The local Ritz-Carlton hotel offers an entire Thanksgiving package. Club Med Sandpiper is another family-oriented resort in Florida, and actually offers all-inclusive packages.
